Hello, can you introduce yourself?
Hi, my name is Tracy and I'm a London Met student. I'm currently studying international business management.
What does a typical day look like for you?
So, I'll give you two examples. A day where I actually have uni and a day when I don't have uni, so when I have uni usually lectures start at 10am. So I will probably wake up at 8am, do my bed, have a shower, get ready to go to uni, skip my breakfast because I never have breakfast. It's just because I never have time to have breakfast because, it takes me roughly an hour to get to campus because of traffic. So when I get to campus I’ll just go to my lecture, it’s usually two hours, so it will probably finish around 12-12.30pm and then I will look for lunch. Like I will look for what to eat because, I never take lunch as well. After that, I'll probably have a seminar. If I have a seminar, I will go to the seminar. If I don't, I would just go to the library and revisit my notes. If I have a seminar, I'll probably do it after the seminar, or if I, if the seminar is too long or it’s too late, I'll just leave it for the next day and go back home. So when I get home I'll probably shower again, revisit my notes if I haven't finished what I was doing at the library and then have dinner and sleep. So a day when I don't have lectures or seminars, if it's near exam time or if it's near assignments time, I will usually go to the library. If not, I will usually go to work. If I'm not working I will usually just revisit my notes to be honest.
What is the best thing about studying at London Metropolitan University?
I’ll say I don't have just one best thing, but there are a couple. I mean, the first one is that it’s really diverse, so you can probably find someone that has a similar background like you, so you don't feel left out. Like you feel like you also have someone that looks like you or is similar, like you will have similar backgrounds. And the second best thing is that it’s in London, so you get a lot of opportunities in general.
What's your accommodation like and how did you find it?
I found my accommodation on SpareRoom and I think it’s quite cool, it’s like an en-suite. So I have my own toilet, but I share the living room and the kitchen with other girls, so it's not too bad actually.
What is the first year of uni like?
I would say the first year of uni is really chaotic because, you have to make new friends. You have to find your way around in the campus. If you are not from London, you have to get familiar to London and London is, you know, a chaotic city. So you have to try new things, new restaurants. I feel like, first year is a whole bunch of new experiences and I love it.
What's one thing you wish you knew before studying?
I would say one thing I wish I knew before studying is the modules that I’ll actually study. So I didn't do my research properly. I knew what I wanted to study, but I didn't go into the London Met websites to see the modules that actually come with it. Look at your modules before.
Are there jobs available on campus?
Yeah, there are jobs available on campus. I think there is a whole section in the London Met University website where the University uploads vacancies.
What is your course like?
The course is like studying business on a deeper level, but not just the UK business in the UK economy, but it’s basically based globally. So that's why it's called international, so we do study what is going on in the economy and in the business abroad, like in Europe, Africa, in the UK and all of that. So I feel like it's really interesting, I mean I love it.
What has university taught you that you haven't learned anywhere else?
University has taught me how to save. Like it's not that I couldn't learn anywhere else how to save but, I feel like I had the need to learn in university, especially here in London. Like if you don't save like, you have to save basically, long story short. Because even if you're working part time when we have exams or assignments, you will not be able to work as much as you did before or you will not be able to work as much as you like. So that's when the money that you saved comes in. So yeah, I feel like saving. That's one. That’s what uni has taught me, saving.
What do you do in your free time?
That's a good question. So I basically don't have anything specific that I do. It depends on the day. I most of the time hang out with my friends. Now I want to pick gym as a hobby because, you know, I want to have a healthy lifestyle. So I usually go to the gym like three times a week. I won't say when it's my free time, I go to the gym. Even when I'm not free, I must squeeze the gym inside. So yeah, so say go out with my friends. If it's during the weekend, I actually travel as well. But then if I'm not free and I have to go to work, I don't.
How much do you spend on food shopping every week?
So I feel like it really depends on how many days I will eat out, or how many days I will not eat out, but I would say roughly between £30 to £40.
How do you afford studying in London?
Student Finance! Okay jokes aside, I feel like Student Finance is really a great help. I think finding a part time job will surely help you.
